Hello -
I’m planning on heading up to the mountains in mid-May for some concentrated painting time, and am putting the word out to artists friends to see if anyone is interested in joining me. This is not a workshop and there will be no organized activities—just a chance to hang out and paint with friends in a beautiful place. Here are the details:
Where?
Clare Tappaan Lodge in the Soda Springs area, near Donner Pass, just off Highway 80. The lodge is run by the Sierra Club, but you don’t have to be a member to stay there. (I think you get a discount of $10 per night if you’re a member.) The accommodations are rustic, with bunk rooms and shared bathrooms, but the place will be mostly empty so we can spread out. (There are 145 beds.) There is a lot of common space: dining hall, big living room with fireplace, a library with pot bellied stove, game room—and a big hot tub that works about half the time, where you can look out at the stars.
How much does it cost?
For a bunk in a shared room in low season, the cost is approx. $75 a night. This includes all meals so you don’t have to cook or think about food while you’re there— you can spend all your time making art. However to keep the costs low everybody has to sign up for a chore each day, like setting the tables for breakfast, or sweeping the dining room after dinner. There are no other costs, aside from driving up there.
Where can you go to paint?
If you don’t feel like leaving the lodge, you can set up and paint on one of their balconies overlooking the surrounding forest. Or head out on the trails that start at the back door of the lodge. Or you can drive a short distance to Donner Lake or the network of trails around the summit, including the Pacific Crest Trail. It’s a beautiful part of the world.
How do you get there?
Driving is by far the easiest, and I will try to arrange carpools so not everyone has to drive. If the traffic is light you can get there in just under 3 hours from SF. If you really want to do it by public transit, see the info on this page.
What will the weather be like?
All bets are off in this time of climate change, but most likely the days will be pleasantly warm and the nights cold. However, the altitude is around 7,000 ft, and once a decade or so there is a snowfall in May.
When:
I’m planning on heading up on the morning of Friday May 13 and returning Tuesday the 17th. However this is not a group booking: you can book for as many or as few nights as you need. The lodge will be mostly empty, so you can even leave it to the last minute to book if you don’t know what you want to do.
