Watercolor Wonders
To celebrate the vibrancy of watercolor and its impact in the art world, we went to seven American and British museums and asked curators to select a single significant watercolor from their collections.

How to Paint a Cloudy Sky
When artists decide to paint in watercolours, some of the most favoured subjects are landscapes. And that, invariably, involves skies.
Now of course, you can just paint a plain old blue sky, lightened off towards the horizon. And that's fine for many pictures, as you don't want a busy sky to take away from the rest of the landscape.

Shine On, Sunflower Yellow
The sunflower’s golden hues have inspired artists for centuries. The flowers themselves have been favored subjects for several painters, most famously van Gogh, but rich yellows appear in all manner of images and objects.

Calla Lily in Watercolor, Step by Step
by Claudia Díaz Hernández
When I am watering the garden and see a flower that inspires me, I grab my phone and take many photos of it. I love spring time, when you can see from one day to another how flowers appear and change over time. I keep tons of photos to choose from when it comes time to single one out to paint.

The idea of beauty in the mundane is not a new concept, but it drives me to help enlighten those that haven’t considered the pleasure to be found in an old door with its flaking, faded paint. Angus McEwan
